Osaka Begins Coaching Trial with Wiktorowski

Renowned Polish coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, who played a key role in Iga Swiatek’s rise to the top of women’s tennis, is set to work with Japan’s Naomi Osaka. The four-time Grand Slam champion is attempting to rebuild her career after a long break, and this coaching change comes at a crucial moment.

Wiktorowski, 44, helped Swiatek win four of her six Grand Slam titles and maintained her dominance in the WTA rankings until their partnership ended in October last year. A native of Warsaw, he is widely respected for his strategic expertise and previously coached Polish legend Agnieszka Radwanska from 2011 to 2018.

The switch comes after Osaka parted ways with French coach Patrick Mouratoglou, following her second-round exit at the Washington tournament. Osaka had been training under Mouratoglou since September 2024, during her comeback from maternity leave. Mouratoglou is best known for his long-time association with Serena Williams.

Currently ranked No. 49 in the world, 27-year-old Osaka is in the early stages of rebuilding her form. She made a promising start at the Montreal tournament, defeating Canadian qualifier Ariana Arseneault 6-4, 6-2. She will next face Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova in the second round.

A former World No. 1 and winner of two Australian Open and two US Open titles, Osaka took a break from tennis in 2023 to give birth to her daughter, Shai. Her return has shown flashes of brilliance, but she is still striving for consistency and rhythm—something Wiktorowski may now help her achieve.
