Shubman Gill’s commanding 269 at Edgbaston has etched his name into Indian cricket history. His knock is now the highest score by an Indian Test captain, surpassing Virat Kohli’s 254* in 2019. It also ranks as the seventh-highest score for India in Test cricket, with only Virender Sehwag’s 319 ahead among captains.
Gill became just the second Indian captain to score a double century away from home, joining Kohli. He reached the milestone in only his third innings as captain, matching Sunil Gavaskar’s record for fastest double ton by an Indian skipper. At 25 years and 298 days, Gill is the second youngest Indian captain to achieve this feat, behind MAK Pataudi.
His 269 is also the highest score by an Asian Test captain outside the subcontinent, beating Marvan Atapattu’s 249. Gill is now the third Indian to score a double century in England, after Gavaskar and Dravid, and the fifth cricketer globally to notch double hundreds in both Tests and ODIs.
India’s innings of 587 was their fourth-highest total in England, and the most by a visiting team at Edgbaston since 2003. The team added a record 376 runs after the fall of the fifth wicket, with Gill contributing to two century-plus stands—203 with Jadeja and 144 with Sundar. These partnerships marked only the second time a visiting team achieved two 100+ stands for the sixth wicket or lower in a Test innings in England.
Gill’s control percentage of 95.2% during his 387-ball stay was the highest among away double hundreds since 2006. He also became the fourth Indian to score centuries in his first two Tests as captain and joined elite company with hundreds in three consecutive Tests against England.
